Is AI Making Your Sales Team Faster or More Valuable to Buyers?

AI is helping salespeople move faster. The bigger question is whether customers are getting more value from them.

It's Monday morning, and a sales manager is reviewing the pipeline.

The numbers look encouraging. Buyers are arriving better informed. Discovery calls are shorter. Demos are happening sooner. Quotes are going out days earlier than they did a year ago.

By most measures, the team is moving faster than ever. The sales manager sees shorter sales cycles and greater deal velocity.

Then a few weeks later, the same opportunities start to look different. One buyer asks for a 15% discount. Another chooses a lower-cost competitor. A third goes quiet after the proposal.

What happened?

In many cases, the deals moved faster through the sales process without moving the buyer any closer to understanding why your solution is worth the investment.

The AI Speed Trap

The AI Speed Trap occurs when AI-assisted research accelerates buyers toward demos, proposals, and pricing before they've evaluated the full economic and business impact of their decision.

It often starts with a request that sounds like great news: "We've done our research. Just show us a demo and send pricing."

A salesperson eager to advance the opportunity complies. The opportunity moves forward in the CRM, and the sales manager reports strong deal velocity at the next leadership meeting.

But has the buyer's understanding of the business case for purchasing your solution advanced at all?

How the AI Speed Trap Costs Salespeople and Businesses

The AI Speed Trap doesn't just put your price at risk. Its effects can show up in several places at once.

For salespeople:

  • They become order takers. When the buyer sets the agenda, the salesperson's role shrinks to delivering demos and quotes the buyer could compare without them.
  • They lose access to decision makers. A salesperson who skips discovery may never meet the executives who care about the outcome, and those executives often make the final call.
  • Their commissions shrink. Deals compared on price tend to close at lower margins, and discounts come out of the salesperson's pay as well as the company's profit.

For the business:

  • Margins erode. If buyers can't see your differentiated value, price becomes the easiest way to compare suppliers. Your lower-cost competitors may benefit most.
  • Forecasts become less reliable. Deals that move quickly through early stages can stall or slip once stakeholders start asking questions the business case never answered.
  • Partnerships become transactions. A customer who buys on price may shop the next order on price too, which limits the growth you can earn from that account over time.

You Can Have Both: Faster and More Valuable

Here's the encouraging part. Speed and value can work together.

Gartner's May 2026 research found AI saves salespeople nearly 5 hours a week. Yet 72% of surveyed sales organizations reported low reinvestment of those savings into higher-value selling activities.

The organizations that did reinvest were 2.2 times more likely to exceed their customer growth goals.

So the opportunity isn't choosing between faster and more valuable. It's having the discipline, as a leader and as a team, to turn part of that time into customer value every week.

Consider two salespeople preparing for the same meeting. Both use AI to research the prospect and draft a proposal. The second also investigates the customer's competitive environment, explores their likely strategic priorities, anticipates what the buyer learned from AI, and prepares questions the buyer hasn't considered.

Both became more productive. Only the second is prepared to create more value for the customer.

AI productivity is what your salespeople gain. Customer value is what your business gets rewarded for.

Three Coaching Questions Before You Celebrate Deal Velocity

The next time an opportunity moves quickly, ask your salesperson:

  1. What did you help this customer understand that their AI research didn't show them? This reveals whether the salesperson added insight or simply delivered information the buyer already had.
  2. How does our business case connect to the outcomes their leadership is accountable for? This shows whether the value extends beyond price and specifications to the customer's strategic goals.
  3. If your champion presented this to their leadership tomorrow without you, could they defend why we're worth the investment? This tests whether the salesperson has prepared the customer for the conversations where the decision is actually made.

If the answers are unclear, the deal may be moving faster than the value behind it.

The Leadership Choice Ahead

AI will keep making your team faster. That part is largely happening on its own.

Whether your team also becomes more valuable to buyers depends on what you measure, what you coach, and what you celebrate. A pipeline review that rewards speed alone may be pulling your best salespeople straight toward demos, quotes, and discounts.

The teams that win with AI-informed buyers are likely to be the ones that reinvest their time, week after week, into insight their customers can't get from AI.
